I had a dream of drinking Tequila in Tequila while listening to Tequila by Dan+Shay. To do this, I booked an affordable Tequila tour through Airbnb which was an all-day affair but offered some amazing photo opportunities as well as some dang-good tequila.
The tour I booked was predominantly for domestic tourists and other Spanish-speakers. I don’t speak any Spanish which I knew would be difficult. That being said, it’s your choice if you have a good time or not. I decided to embrace the tour and I loved that everyone on the tour was from various parts of Mexico. I got a unique insight into the country and culture. Most spoke some English and they helped me through the tour and even those that didn’t speak English tried to include me in all activities and, of course, get me to drink. They invited me out on the town after and I happy accepted because this is why I came to Mexico!
I was staying in Guadalajara but the tour includes an air conditioned van ride to and from Tequila. The tour was jam-packed with activities which can be good or bad depending on how much energy you have. My guide, Diana, was so kind she did everything in Spanish but would run back (while the rest of the tour waited) and translate the whole thing into English (more or less). No one seemed bothered that they had to wait for me and her to finish the section in English. We had lots of tequila at each place we went and it was all smooth. The first part of the tour was shot after shot but fortunately I brought a backpack of food and some bottles of juice.
In the actual town of tequila there isn’t much to do but I joined the Mexican locals on the tour for lunch and they showed me a good time, singing along to the classic Mexican songs apparently everyone knew except me, and kept paying the mariachi band to play and play. You do have to pay for the lunch and it’s over priced but that’s what you get for going on a tour of tequila. The food was okay, the ambiance was lovely, and the photo-ops were a-plenty.
I had two hours in Tequila which was a lot for there being so little to do, however I found some joy in strolling the colorful, cobblestone streets and taking photos in between the traffic. If you are on the tour specifically to gram, you’ll get what you came for but this is also the time when the group sobers up and the mood can change, so keep that in mind and be sure to order a drink with lunch if you want to keep the good times flowing!
Finally, we stopped in what seemed to be a really local bar in the middle of nowhere where we drank from clay pots and danced in the rain with the mountains as a back drop. I wouldn’t recommend staying in the actual town of Tequila but you’ll get all opportunities you need for photos with a Tequila tour from Guadalajara.
